Designing Painting On Paper
I wanted to design a painting that could be used for a jigsaw, it needed to have lots of interest and colour.
I collated lots of images from the Internet and after printing them out, I had them arranged on my drawing easel. With my paper outlined with the correct size of my painting I designed the painting with the points of interest being the field mouse. The designing of the actual painting is my favourite piece of the painting, starting with a blank piece of paper and creating a finished piece.
Blocking In Colour
I traced the drawing onto the canvas, going over the outlines with paint before covering the canvas with a loose wash of colour. I then make some dark green colours to block in the foreground. Not any detail at this point, loose shapes. I blocked in the mouse hanging by its tail.
Blocking Foreground Shapes
I continued blocking in shapes of the foliage, making sure that I left dark negative shapes of interest. No detail is required at this point only tones of different colours.
Adding Various Shapes For Flowers
I started adding different colours in the background for the shapes of the leaves, adding more colours to the flowers.
Continuing To Add Various Shapes For Interest
I decided to add another mouse into the composition as another point of interest, adding more tones of colour and detail as I travelled around the painting.
Completed Painting
The last thing to add to the painting was the highlights, which in my opinion brought the whole painting together. This painting was all about creating a little bit of fun, there is lots of interest and detail for the viewer. Hopefully one day it will be used for a jigsaw which I feel would be a challenge and a lot of fun. Hope you enjoyed the breakdown and the finished piece.
