Northern Lights

Northern LightsHarley Johnson2025-11-05T11:05:27+00:00
Basic Landscape Painted
I wanted to paint the Northern lights, this natures wonder is a challenge and something I wanted to do for a long time. I under painted a canvas and then loosely painted the landscape. Painting the dark sky and the foreground in lighter tones of colour.
Defining The Landscape
I mixed dark blues and blacks to define the landscape, loosely painting the sky colour in the foreground to be the reflections of the sky in the water. I use the dark blues and black to define the waters edge in the foreground.
Adding Colours To The Skyline
Mixing tones of light blues I loosely blocked in colour in the bottom part of the skyline, careful not to paint too much detail.
Adding Shapes In The Sky
Mixing tones of blues I loosely added shapes in the sky, making sure they were loosely painted.
Continuing To Add Shapes To The Foreground
I added tones of greys and whites in the foreground, no definite shapes were needed and this added depth to the painting.
More Detail Added
Using mixtures of all the colours, I added more details.
Painting Completed
I added more detail and in the background some yellows and reds to add a focal point. I have enjoyed painting this piece of artwork, I hope you enjoyed seeing the progress and the finished piece.
