Robin In Holly

Robin In HollyHarley Johnson2025-11-05T12:09:34+00:00
Design and Drawing Completed
This painting was a pleasure to design, definitely one for bringing out at Christmas. The intricate shapes of the holy, leaving interesting negative shapes. Which I like to include in my artwork. The little cheeky Robin looking back at the viewer, the soft landscape in the background giving the composition depth.
Jon Drawing
Here I am in my favourite place in my studio, drawing the final pieces of this painting.
Outline Being Painted
After tracing the drawing onto a prepared canvas I painted over the pencil lines, not to lose any details.
Outline Painted
Here you can see the drawing ready for the painting.
Blocking In Background
Mixing some tones of yellow I began loosely painting the background, I added some mixes of raw umber and added some shapes in the landscape.
Adding Holly Shapes
Not wanting to lose the shapes of the Holly, I mixed some greens and loosely painted them in. I then went on to use some red and painted in the berries.
Background Completed
Mixing black and purple paint I loosely painted the trees, making sure that gaps were left letting light through. Using a darker tone of the same colour I painted the foreground. I painted the snow and blocked in the robin.
Adding Detail To Holly and Robin
This part of the painting adding detail is time consuming, the rewards are well worth it. Seeing the painting take shape and the hidden details is what I like to create.
Painting Completed
The completed painting is something I am proud of, I hope you enjoyed the design and painting.
