Abstract Winter Landscape

Abstract Winter LandscapeHarley Johnson2025-10-28T16:54:28+00:00
Background Simply Painted
This painting was an exercise in using a limited colour palette, very little detail and painted in oils. No preliminary drawing required, working on a prepared canvas I loosely painted basic landscape detail.
Adding Basic Colours
Mixing a range of blue and white paint I blocked in the sky, adding more white to the horizon.
Adding Dark Basic Shapes
Using some black paint I loosely blocked in the water, making sure that it was an interesting shape and leading the viewer away into the distance. Using some of the mixed blue, I added this to the water to give the reflection from the sky. I added loose detail around the composition, making sure that the horizon was lost in places.
Adding Simple Shapes
Here I am using my designed paintbrushes to paint, being able to adjust the angle of the paintbrush gives me the opportunity to keep the paint strokes loose and interesting.
Adding More Detail
Adding some highlights to the painting completed this piece of artwork. Knowing when to stop is a sometimes harder than others, the temptation to add more paint can spoil the painting. I hope you enjoyed the process.
