Basic Under Painting
This painting didn’t need a lot of preparation, I loosely under painted the background ensuring that the horizon was lighter than the foreground.
Simple Tones Of Paint Applied
Mixing various orange colours and yellows I loosely painted the background, intentionally wanting the centre lighter. I used plenty of liquin keeping the paint loose and workable, using a fan brush to blend in the colours. Mixing dark greens and painting in the foreground, loosely blending into the oranges. Finally adding some red paint into the mix to give some impression of warmth and a complimentary colour.
More Background Shapes Painted
I continued mixing green tones and started painting loose shapes of foliage, being careful not over paint the background. Adding more dark shapes in places.
Basic Shapes Of Green Added
Adding more lighter green tone of shapes into the landscape, random shapes and nothing else at this point.
Simple Shapes Of Dark Paint
Mixing dark tones of green I added foliage shapes, these were included in the foreground to. Some of these will be lost in the painting process, however adding them now adds shape to the composition.
Simple Red Shapes Applied
I mixed some lighter greens of colour, adding various impressions of foliage. Mixing more colours of yellow ochre and white I added loose shapes of grasses around the composition with a palette knife .
I mixed various tones of red colour, I then drew with paint shapes of poppies using a thin paint brush. Using the palate knife I started painting shapes of poppies.
More Colours and Shapes Applied
Having mixed tones of Green I added leaves, making sure that there was not too much detail and no uniformity. A Palette knife has a unique style which is lovely to use in this sort of painting. I continued painting the poppies in the same style, adding flecks of black for the centres.
Introducing More Colours
The composition needed more colour, I mixed some yellows, whites and purples. Adding shapes of these colours into the painting. This I felt gave more interest and balanced the painting.
Painting Completed
There were a lot of stages to this painting, however I please with the results and the original hangs proudly on my wall in my home. I hope you enjoyed the process of it being created, thank you for reading.
